Waiting for Spring

Being in Ohio has its downsides when it comes to weather. Especially when Winter is being tenacious and not giving way easily to Spring. I’m getting anxious to get out and hit the trails, to get back into my regular walking/hiking routine and start losing the Winter pounds I have gained. Sure, I could go walking at the mall during their hour before opening but it doesn’t really stretch out my stride and flat hard surfaces really do no good.

Then there is the fact too that I have spent so much time living in the south that coming back to Ohio and been here for four years now, I am still not accustomed to the cold and temperamental weather. I see little signs that the season for growing is coming but when you start to think it will warm up, have sunny days and all, Mother Nature laughs and gives another round of rain and snow with freezing temps. All I can to her is “Stop it!” There are things I want to do and get prepared for! My friend and I have started doing 5k walk/runs last year and are continuing to do it this year. I am eager to get going with that. Not that I am a runner; I have disliked running ever since high school gym days and doing that during hot Texas mornings. Let me walk, I’ll keep a good long stride and get a 5k done in under an hour.

Another bonus for getting these cold snaps done with….opening windows and letting fresh air in! I do not like stuffy apartments or houses. I like fresh air circulating. I will keep windows open day and night unless it is raining or it gets too hot inside. I may not have the opportunity at times to get to enjoy the outdoors but I can at least bring it in when I can.

This longing for warmer weather and sunshine also has me thinking of what I will be planting in my pots this year. I have a balcony that they are placed and while one is rooted with perennial herbs, the other two had annuals. Even with my limited funds, I do plan on getting to enjoy my balcony this year!

Now, time to ready for work but the first notes of spring are calling as birds are singing. It is something. If the birds are returning, then we are soon to be seeing brighter days ahead.
